On May 2014, senior students from Flomaton High School joined several other area high schools to participate in the Escambia County Bar Association's Law Day activities. Law Day, a national recognition promoting a greater understanding of the role of law in America, is a special time of year for students in Escambia County. The Escambia County Bar Association is recognized by the state for its Law Day activities. Twelve students (along with two alternates) served as jurors in a real criminal case. This year, students observed the prosecution and defense in a drug-related case. Micah Brown, Alex Moncada, Tyler Smith, and Lindsey White served on the jury for the trial.
The day began with an introduction by the local bar association's president Danny White, who also served as the defendant's lawyer. Alabama State Senator Marc Keahey spoke to the students about the connection between law and politics. Following Senator Keahey's speech, the trial began with Jeff White serving as the prosecutor.
As the evidence was presented, students had to determine the innocence or guilt of the defendant who was charged with possession of a controlled substance. Observing how witnesses are sworn in and questioned was a unique experience for the seniors. The defense argued that the white substance found in his car was cake icing that had spilled. The prosecution presented a test performed on the scene as evidence confirming the presence of crack cocaine. The defense questioned the validity of the evidence by arguing the test performed was not approved by the Department of Forensic Sciences. Students had to weigh each argument to make a conclusion beyond a reasonable doubt. A brief recess was taken with refreshments provided by South Alabama Vending.
Following the events of the trial, the jury was dismissed to deliberate. While the jury was deliberating, local judges also spoke to the students. When the jury returned, the foreperson presented the verdict. The final decision was unanimous. The jury returned with a guity verdict. The decision of the jury is binding because this was not a mock trial that was presented. Students left the Escambia County Courthouse with a better understanding of how the judicial system works.
